My  knowledge of graphic design and concern for media distortion inspired me to develop a contemplative installation intended for the public as the focus of my capstone. Photo-journalism continues to bear a remarkable impact on society's opinions and actions. This influence prompted me to explore further the dependability of photography in the new age of technology.

Through this process of trying to understand the many dynamics of photo editing, I wanted to design an installation that would encourage a thought-provoking experience, making the viewer question their perceptions and heuristics when obtaining information for photos in the digital world.

HEURISTIC HEALING

RESEARCH

After researching and experimenting I learned that images in photography are being manipulated in various ways that evoke specific visual responses that can strip away the value of truth. So if truth in photography is hard to find what ways can we make ourselves more sensible to the manipulation.

Through this I have investigated the value of truth in photography and how certain manipulations of color and context can change the narrative and then emotions attained by its viewers. I have seen these manipulations, particularly when comparing photography from both the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Lives Matter movement.

The experience

The installation begins with an introduction to an area to scan a QR code, this code provides a guide for the user to follow as they move through the space. When first walking in, the user is presented with 4 images, where they are prompted to answer brief reflection questions for each photo as they digest it.

AS they walk through the first hallway, they will submit their responses, and start developing their own perspectives of what they are seeing. As they turn the corner they will be prompted with a newsfeed wall where they are overwhelmed by text from postings on behalf of the photos they just saw.
